Washington, DC -- Lincoln Memorial
Wow, this memorial to the 16th president of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln, is impressive and huge. I was totally surprised by its size. It stands at the west end of the National Mall and is a neoclassical monument by Henry Bacon based on ancient Greek temples.

The monument is190 feet long, 119 feet wide, and almost 100 feet high and is 38 fluted Doric columns, one for each of the thirty six states in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death. That's pretty symbolic to me....all the states apparently mourned his death. The north and south side chambers contain carved inscriptions of Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address and his Gettysburg Address. It's inspiring to see Lincoln's words carved in stone. Lincoln sits in contemplation between the north and south chanmbers in the central hall. I love that he was alone, a solitary figure in this mammouth hall...the original solitary thinking man.
